Birch & Elder - Year 3 Signs of Spring
Birch were able to explore the bigger boundaries of Broad Oak available to them now they have reached the dizzy heights of year two. They also were set the challenge of looking for signs of spring as they needed to work out which areas they should steer clear of in order to let the beautiful bluebells to grow.
Due to high winds, Elder Group had to stay at school for their session and even though it POURED with rain they did not let the weather dampen their spirits. We visited the Glebe field looking for signs of spring and differentiating between plants that could be described as wild or cultivated. We discussed the Beaufort Scale which was devised in 1805 by Sir Francis Beaufort to measure the force of the wind. We also used a choice of charcoal, pastels, crayons, and pencil to draw pictures for the Broad Oak Nature Diary.
Things that we got excited about: a jaw bone, a mushroom that reminded us of a meringue, a spotty leaf that reminded us of lots of things including an arrow head and an ice cream cone, a jelly ear fungus, a purple flower that looked like a tiny tulip, cherry blossom, moss with long stalks growing out of a fence post, deer prints, squelch mud and much more besides!!
