1st December 2017

Our Christian value for this term is - Peace and we will be teaching it through the parable of The Good Samaritan - Luke 10: 30-37

Collective Worship and Christian Value Award

Our Collective Worship is a daily gathering of the whole school for worship, praise and prayer.  The children enter the hall quietly and we always begin with beautiful music and the lighting of a candle, lit by someone with a birthday that day or as close as we can to it.  We always finish with our School Prayer as well as prayers from the school prayer wall where children have written their own prayers. Sometimes we finish with a gentle sign of the peace.

On Monday, Mrs Omer used children from her class to demonstrate things they had learnt, and we discussed how it felt to learn things.  We also used Paul's words from Ephesians 4, 4-9 to remind us that God loves learning too!  Tuesday was hymn practice day and Wednesday's Collective Worship helped us all understand that advent is about waiting, as was Thursday - but with more emphasis on Lego as well as the meaning of Christmas!

We celebrated Celebration Assembly on Friday, and there were a lot of Stars of the Week as well as House Points, Walking Bug and Peace stickers awarded.

Our Christian value this term is peace and we use Jesus' parable of The Good Samaritan from Luke 10:30-37 as a way of helping us understand the concept of community.  Yet again, as with all parables, it's not an easy one - there is a lot to 'unpick'. Small stories with big meanings!

Congratulations to Caitlynn Barton and India Shimmin, both from class 4 who received our Peace Award this week.
Our School Prayer:

Father God,

This is our school.
Let love flow.
Let the rooms be filled
 with joy and happiness,
Let the outside be filled with fun and
 friendship.
Bless us all as we learn
with you Lord in all that we do.

Amen

Rehearsals for the KS1 production are going extremely well and the children are all looking forward to performing for their parents.  Tickets will be available from the school office from Monday but due to fire regulations are limited to two per family.  There will be a clipboard available for parents to request additional tickets and these will be distributed to parents on 8th December.  Please collect your initial two ticket allocation as soon as possible.

There are two performances for parents - Thursday 14th December and Friday 15th December, both beginning at 2.15pm.  We would ask those parents with pre-school children to come to the dress rehearsal which is on Tuesday 12th December.  This is when the remainder of the school will watch the performance.

Advent Service

The children in Y1 have been invited to sing at the Advent Service on 3rd December.  This is a service where they will have fun, sing and see our young people lead the service - from the talk, to prayers, to games and drama!  It would be great to see families from the school come along - there is even breakfast served!  Fun for the whole family with food thrown in!

Community News
Do you know anyone who’ll be on their own this Christmas? St Mary’s will be hosting a Christmas lunch, on Christmas day itself, for anyone who’d like some festive company. There will be turkey and all the trimmings, decorations, silly hats etc - 12.30 to 2.30pm. It will all be free. If you know someone who might like an invitation, or for more information, please email beckyaddisgk@gmail.com
Christmas at St. Mary's, Goudhurst

Advent Challenge Christmas is such a busy time and we would love to help you make the most out of the next few weeks leading up to Christmas Day. We're giving the Posada a rest this year (but it may return next) but would really encourage you to get involved with the Advent Challenge - it encourages you to do something for someone else every day in Advent - and it's definitely something that you can involve the children in. Here's the link:

Nativity Service The Christmas Eve Nativity Service is always a highlight of the year and if your children would like to get involved as an angel or a shepherd, then come along this Sunday, 3 December, to St. Mary's at 12:00 for the first rehearsal.

Memory Tree We know that, in amidst all the happiness and celebration of Christmas, there is also sadness, loneliness and grief for many. If you would like to remember a loved one, or to acknowledge something difficult in your life this Christmas, our Memory Tree will be in St. Mary's from Monday, 4 December. Come and write the name of someone you love but won't see over Christmas, or a prayer, or the name of someone who is suffering and hang it on the tree. The church is open all day every day during daylight hours, so you can come in whenever it suits you.

Christmas Day LunchThis year we are laying on Christmas lunch for anyone for whom Christmas Day is just not that much fun – it might be that you’re on your own and would enjoy some company, or you’d just like to have lunch with other local people that day, or you might know someone in the village who might like to be invited. To find out more or to come along please let Becky in the Church Office know so that we can cater for everyone – Becky’s email is beckyaddisgk@gmail.com or the Church Office number is 01580 211739.

There's lots more information on the church website, including times of our Christmas service, but if you have any questions do get in touch with Rev Hugh or Caroline Turvey.

Information for Local Residents,

At the Parish Council meeting earlier this month a local resident asked about the proposed changes to the Parliamentary Boundaries with the reduction of MPs from 650 to 600.

See www.bce2018.org.uk   for details.

It seems likely that Goudhurst Parish will be in the new constituency of Mid Kent and Ticehurst.

If the proposed changes are implemented, it means that we will no longer be in the Tunbridge Wells constituency.

On the other hand there are no changes proposed for the Boroughs and Goudhurst Parish will continue to be part of the Borough of Tunbridge Wells.
