How to help your children at home...

To help your children at home, please remember to practice with them their spellings and times tables. Practicing these together will make their learning more fun, but also help to support them if they're finding it tricky.

Also, if you and your child were interested in taking the Kent 11+ test, please be aware that the format has changed from recent years. Here is a link to the new familiarisation booklet, which shows what sort of questions might be on the test, and how you may approach answering them.

There are of course many ways that parents can help their child with their learning and support them in their education.  One of the simplest ways is to talk to your child about their day and perhaps ask them to show you something new they have learned how to do such as a maths calculation.  Reading with your child regularly at home and setting aside time for any home learning set by the school are important ways to support your child.  Parents can also use everyday activities to reinforce learning and practice key skills such as counting objects or practising their times tables.  

Understanding the National Curriculum and keeping in touch with what your child is learning will help you identify where you can help your child at home.  To help you to understand the national curriculum and how it is taught in each year group we have included some reference materials in the Curriculum Overview menu on the left.  Do bear in mind that children are all unique individuals and learn at different rates.  The emphasis on learning in our school is to ensure your child is "secure" in each area of the core subjects before they move on to the next area of learning; it is not the aim to progress the child through the curriculum rapidly to tackle learning from the year above's curriculum but to broaden their experience and skills where appropriate in order that they can "master" their learning.  If you imagine each area of learning to be a "building block" you can understand how important it is that children have a solid foundation of building blocks for their entire primary education as the base for their secondary and further education and for life.  If you have any concerns about your child's learning always speak to your child's teacher.
