An amazing week has passed in Hippos class. Thanks to your quick response and generosity, we set up an incredibly well-stocked fruit and veg shop and the children handled real money in order to buy items to go on to make fanastic recipes in the outdoor home corner and mud kitchen. The fact that they had such an opportunity made their learning about money richer and broader and all children had an incredible knowledge of the value of coins by the end of the week. Thank you for springing into action for the little ones.
Thank you to those that came along to the Phonics and Maths workshop. I had some lovely feedback which made it all the more worthwhile, but I sincerely hope it offered an insight into how your children learn and that you have gained some confidence in supporting your children. Powerpoint slide and phonics sound mats with digraph sounds were sent home to all.
You may have noticed that I wasn't in class on Friday (I had warned the children ahead of Friday that I wouldn't be in) this was because I was on a paediatric frist aid course. I will be attending the second session this Friday too. Mrs Mileham and Mrs Coleman will take lead.
A little reminder that 'Space and Superheroes' theme day is on Friday 8th December.
This week reinforces childrenʼs knowledge of spoken numbers and matching written numerals up to 10. They order numbers, count on and back from a given number and write numerals 1 to 10. They can also say one more and one less than a given number and understand the corresponding addition and subtraction number sentences.
Support this at home by playing 'one more/one less bingo!' Write the numbers 1 to 10 on a grid (make sure they are out of sequence) And then challenge your child to cross off the number that is 'one more than...' or 'one less than...' the number you call out.
Phonics and Literacy
ch - Move arms at sides as if you are a train, saying ch, ch, ch.
ue - Point to people around you and say you, you, you.
er - Roll hands over each other like a mixer and say erererer.
ar - Open mouth wide and say ah, as if at the doctors (UK English).
This week concludes our Phase 2 phonics sounds. We will use the final weeks of term to revise all learnt sounds and apply them to our reading and writing as much as possible.
Writing focus: Last week the children started writing their own non-fiction booklets about Space. We managed to get half way through and the children have blown us away with the quality of their work. This week we will complete the booklets.
Expressive Art and Design
The children are now in full-flow with rehearsals for the nativity 'Manger Mouse'. They are sounding wonderful, and this week we will be working hard on the 'performance' element and learning how to project our voices.
The children will also work towards creating some artwork to accompany the nativity performance.
Understanding the World
We will be looking down on Earth from space this week using google earth. We will have a look at all of the countries we can see and have discussions about their climate, traditions, customs and foods.
The children will sample a range of food from around the world. We will pin-point the origin of the food by locating countries on a globe and make connections about why certain countries might produce particular 'flavours' of foods. We will talk about likes and dislikes, and investigate flavours further.
