Intended Learning WC 20.11.17

Class R Hippos
For week beginning: 20th November 2017
Class Messages

Another happy week in Hippos class has passed. It was lovely to see you all at the parent consultation evenings, thank you for coming and celebrating your children's successes. Considering the children have really only been in school for 10 weeks they are doing remarkably well.

Phonics & Maths Workshop -  I would like to invite you to come and join me for a session all about foundation stage Phonics and Maths. Over the last few years these sessions have been well received and parents have commented on how useful the sessions have been with helping them understand how their children learn phonics and maths and to support their learning at home. The date confirmed date is Tuesday 21st Nov 8:50am-9:50am in the school hall. Tea, coffee and biscuits of course will be there to help you through this intensive session :)

You now should have received a note home outlining the costumes we'd like the children to wear for this years Key Stage 1 Nativity 'Manger Mouse'. Reception children provide a supporting role in the performance and will be singing some of the songs in the performance along with the children in Year 1 and Year 2. Please do not worry too much over the costumes, goats could be adapted sheep costumes if you like.

This week is all about money. Children begin to recognise that different coins have different values (they will buy more or less, are worth more or less). They then begin to match real coins to amounts of money, e.g. 10p is ten 1p coins, 20p is twenty 1p coins. They then start to use money in small amounts to buy things, starting to realise that they can pay a given amount using different combinations of coins.

To support this at home: talk with your child as you peruse the aisles in the supermarket. Do they recognise any (simple) values on the item price labels? Can they select a coin from your hand that matches the value? Discuss the different colours of coins, talk about how the copper coins have the least value and the gold coins have the most. Coin rubbings (laying paper over coins and rubbing over them with crayons) are a nice way for children to familiarise themselves with the different appearances of the coins.

Literacy and Phonics

This weeks sounds;

oi - Cup hands around mouth and shout to another boat saying oi!, ship ahoy!

ue - Point to people around you and say you, you, you.

er - Roll hands over each other like a mixer and say erererer.

ar - Open mouth wide and say ah, as if at the doctors (UK English).

Now the children are familiar with all of the sounds on the sound mat I sent home, why not keep their memory fresh and ask your children to teach you all of the actions and sounds. Let them astound you as they sing along to the Jolly Phonics rhymes (this is a link to the music we use [1])

Our writing focus will be linked to our session on Understanding the World. The children will work over the course of a few sessions to create their own information booklet about Space.

Understanding the World

Linked with Literacy, children will continue their learning about the Planets and the solar system. The children will find out about the purpose of the sun and the moon. They will also begin to learn about gravity. Children will practice using different methods of researching information to help them write their own information booklet about space.

Expressive Art & Design

Children will use different artistic techniques to produce illustrations for their space booklet; this will include marbling, splatter painting and sketching. The children will also beging to explore colour mixing.

In Music, we continue our Nativity rehearsals. The children are sounding amazing (I hope you've heard them singing at home) so we will now throw some choreography in to the mix.
