Welcome back. I do hope you had a restful half term.
We continue our theme of 'building' this half term, and begin to explore India as part of our 'Understanding the World' area of learning. This half term we will take the children to 'The Raj' Indian restaurant in Marden to enable the children not only to experience Indian food, but to enjoy the pastimes that their parents might and to see how other cultures work within and enrich our local communities.
Tuesdays remain my PPA day, but this term my session swaps to the afternoon. As ever, Mrs Mileham will teach RE and PE in this session.
Please note: Forest School continues on Wednesdays, but the group times have swapped over...the afternoon group now goes in the morning and vice versa. Please remember that for ease, the children now may come to school in their forest school kit and stay in their kit for the duration of the day, just bringing spares, waterproofs and indoor shoes.
I am going to hold a 'Science Week' in Hippos class (WC 26th Feb) where the children will conduct an experiment every morning and every afternoon. For each experiement children will make predications and capture observations, using notes/photos/drawings etc. The children will have the opportunity to 'play' with each experiment once they have completed it as per the instructions. Other than their methods of recording their predictions and observations, we will be very 'hands off' in terms of writing, with the aim the week after for the children make their own Science book. To add to the fun, it would be really nice if the children could each have their own 'lab coat' (an old adult's white shirt would be ideal!) but please do not worry if this can't be done, we can find something for all the children to feel included. Lab coats may remain in children's bags for the week.
This week children compare and order numbers to 20. We check that children can match a numeral to 20 with the same number of objects in a set. Children estimate numbers of objects and images and begin to
Support this at home by playing a simple game with your child at dinner time. Write a number between 10 and 20 on a post it and ask your child to count out the corresponding number of pasta pieces. Swap over and allow your child to choose the number...you could make it really fun and get your child to write the number in a puddle of ketchup (great for number formation practice)
Literacy & Phonics
Phonics: We will spend this week reviewing and revising phase 3 letters and sounds and tricky words before we move on to phase 4 next week.
Out Literacy focus this week will be about factual writing. To tie in with our over-arching theme about building, Children will learn about the homes animals make for themselves, particularly animals in our local environment. Children will use apps on the ipads and books from the library to help them research a range of facts before working towards writing their own animal fact sheet.
Support this at home by doing a little research about a favourite wild animal of theirs...something you'd see in out local environment would be fantastic.
We have a big focus on technology this term.
Firstly we will explore our understadning of shape further with the children will using a shape programme on the ipad with the aim to learn how to move, elongate, shrink, 'paint', combine and compound a range of 2D shapes to create a picture of a building or structure.
In following weeks we will be looking at coding, using floor robots.
