Intended Learning WC 16.04.18

Class R Hippos
For week beginning: 16th April 2018
Class Messages

Welcome back, I do hope you had a fantastic couple of weeks off.

Our over-arching theme for this term is 'Pirates', take a look at the topic web on Hippos web page. The theme covers many things including 'under the sea', investigating 'floating and sinking' and looking at mapping and making treasure islands. There will also be a 'theme day' in class where we will invite the children to come dressed up in costume so please keep this in mind. If you have any Piratey things at home that you can donate to us to support our theme we'd be very grateful (please do not send anything in that you might want back) Many thanks.

Parent Information Sessions: We are holding 2 sessions on Wednesday at 3.30 and 3.50pm (one is a repeat of the other, so do only attend one session unless you are incredibly passionate!) The aim of the session is to cover what your child will be learning this term. I will also make it a bit of a question/answer session as I am aware that a lot of what I cover is already available for you to find on the topic web on the website.

Please remember to send in PE kits as we will have PE this week (quite possibly on Tuesday!)

My PPA this term is Tuesday mornings so Mrs Mileham will be in taking the children for PE and RE.

Please may I very respectfully ask that where possible you only pop in to the classroom in the morning where a note in your child's planner will not do the job. We check the planners every single day and simple messages requests will be responded to as soon as possible. I have a limited amount of time to get ready for the children in the morning and my priority has to be that I am ready to receive them and to begin their learning quickly. I am always available to talk after school, or appointments can be made via the school office of by jotting down a request in your child's planner. Many many thanks for your understanding.

Maths

Children count to 100 as a whole class and begin to count further independently. They write numbers to make the longest counting snake ever! Children rehearse the fact that teen numbers are made of 10 and some more and write addition sentences to show this. They also blast off to space to explore planets and rehearse counting back from 20, reinforcing the order of numbers to 20.

Phonics and Literacy

In phonics this week and next we will be revising all tricky words learnt to date. Here is a list should you want to help your children with these. Children should now be able to read all phase 3 tricky words, and this term we continue to focus on phase 4 words. Please remember, these words are for reading not necessarily for writing.

Phase 3

  • she
  • he
  • we
  • me
  • be
  • was
  • you
  • they
  • all
  • are
  • my
  • her

Phase 4

  • said
  • have
  • like
  • so
  • do
  • some
  • come
  • were
  • there
  • little
  • one
  • when
  • out
  • what

Our writing focus this week will be on using 'wow' words, words that have power in their writing. Children will invent their own Pirate character and write sentences using the starter 'If I were a Pirate I would...' Let's see how dastardly they can make them! Ahaaaarrrgggh!!!

Understanding the World

Children will learn about the similarities and differences between groups of people. Children will learn about Pirates, their history, their traditions, the stories behind them and how they worked as a group of people. Children will engage in discussions about how Pirates lived, whether they would have liked to have lived as a Pirate, and whether they can make any comparisons with groups of people in modern society. Do children believe that there are Pirates around today? Children will then write a Pirate fact file on some tea-stained paper that they will have made earlier in the week.

Expressive Art & Design

To tie in with 'Understanding the World' the children will stain paper with tea bags and coffee to give it an old fashioned Pirately feel - children will later turn these into scrolls for their writing.

In Music, children will learn to sing some traditional songs; 'A pirate went to sea' and 'Portside Pirates', they will also learn to dance to sea shanties with the help of their buddies! We are also incredibly lucky this term as the children will receive a 30 minute djembe drumming session per week until we break up in July. We have a specialist teacher called Ben Jackson who will take the children in two groups of 15. Ben is incredibly talented and it's been a pleasure observing his lessons, perhaps we'll find an opportunity to show you our development here at the end of term.
