Another fabulous week has passed in Hippo's class, the children are so engaged by our space theme that it has resulted in some incredible writing. Well done little Hippos.
Parents Evenings are on Tuesday and Thursday and appointments have been available to book via the online system (you will receive a text about this) Appointments are 10mins and run back to back, so may I respectfully ask that you please ensure you are on time to your appoinment to avoid delaying appoinments later on in the shedule. Many thanks! I very much look forward to speaking with you about your children.
Phonics & Maths Workshop - I would like to invite you to come and join me for a session all about foundation stage Phonics and Maths. Over the last few years these sessions have been well received and parents have commented on how useful the sessions have been with helping them understand how their children learn phonics and maths and to support their learning at home. The date I am putting forward is Tuesday 21st Nov 8:50am-9:50am in the school hall (although this date may be subject to change) Tea, coffee and biscuits of course will be there to help you through this intensive session :)
You now should have received a note home outlining the costumes we'd like the children to wear for this years Key Stage 1 Nativity 'Manger Mouse'. Reception children provide a supporting role in the performance and will be singing some of the songs in the performance along with the children in Year 1 and Year 2. Apologies that this note is being sent home very early, it just allows time for you to get costumes together.
This week children will learn about 2D shapes, beginning to identify circles, triangles and rectangles including squares. They will begin to use appropriate language to describe simple 2D shapes. Children will also revise the days of the week and begin to learn the months of the year and the seasons, including key months when festivals and their birthdays occur.
Literacy and Phonics
Literacy: This week children will invent their own character - an alien! They will make their very own alien, and give it a name. They will also design a planet for their alien. The linked writing activity is a fantastic way for children to use their learnt phonics sounds confidently and with a sense of achievement; they will be able to make up nonsense words (words that aren't real) for their alien's name and things he might say, as well as for the name of the planet he lives on.
If you'd like to support writing at home, why not challenge your child to draw their family as alien versions of themselves! Then, your child could have a go at writing nonsense names for their aliens. Help your child separate the sounds they can hear in the names they invent. They can then find the sound on the card below which includes digraph sounds (this is the exact version we use in class) and attempt to copy the letter/s. Remind them of the 'bunny ears' pencil grip!
Phonics Sounds this week:
or - Put hands on head as if ears on a donkey. Move them up down as you say the or in eeyore, eeyore
ng - Imagine you are a weightlifter and pretend to lift a heavy weight above your head saying ng...
oo OO - Move head back and forth as if it is the cuckoo in a cuckoo clock saying u oo, u oo (short and long oo).
ch - Move arms at sides as if you are a train, saying ch, ch, ch
Expressive Art & Design
We will revisit Holst's 'The Planets' as the children were really able to make connections between the music and the planets it describes, the children willdance and move appropriatly to the Music, representin the feeling that Holst was trying to create through the way they move.
Children will now begin practising the Nativity songs both in class and with Year 1 and Year 2 in the hall. This can be quite a strange experience for the children so please talk with them about it as much as possible to get them used to the idea that they will eventually be singing infront of lots of parents.
