Intended Learning WC 06.11.17

Class R Hippos
For week beginning: 6th November 2017
Class Messages

The children have had a great week back at school and have embraced our 'Space and Superheroes' theme whole-heartedly.

Parents Evenings are next Tuesday and Thursday and appointments will be available to book via the online system (you will receive a text about this) Appointments are 10mins and run back to back, so please ensure you are on time to avoid delaying appoinments later on in the shedule. Many thanks! I very much look forward to speaking with you about your children.

Just a reminder that my PPA time now swaps from a Tuesday morning to a Tuesday afternoon so Mrs Mileham will continue to teach the children PE and RE on a Tuesday afternoon.

Phonics & Maths Workshop -  I would like to invite you to come and join me for a session all about foundation stage Phonics and Maths. Over the last few years
these sessions have been well received and parents have commented on how useful the sessions have been with helping them understand how their children learn phonics and maths and to support their learning at home. The date I am putting forward is Tuesday 21st Nov 8:50am-9:50am in the school hall (although this date may be subject to change) Tea, coffee and biscuits of course will be there to help you through this intensive session :)

This week (or possibly next) you will receive a note home outlining the costumes we'd like the children to wear for this years Key Stage 1 Nativity 'Manger Mouse'. Reception children provide a supporting role in the performance and will be singing some of the songs in the performance along with the children in Year 1 and Year 2. Apologies that this note is being sent home very early, it just allows time for you to get costumes together.

This week is another week about counting. Children are chanting numbers to 20 and beginning to chant numbers to 100. They count ten items into a set, and are beginning to count up to 20 items into a set. Children reinforce matching spoken numbers and written numerals to appropriate quantities. They count accurately using one-to-one correspondence and understand conservation of number. They learn to write numbers to 10 and begin to compare and order numbers to 10.

Phonics and Literacy

ch - Move arms at sides as if you are a train, saying ch, ch, ch.

sh - Place index finger over lips and say sh sh sh.

th - Pretend to be naughty clowns and stick out tongue a little for th, th and further for th (this and thumb).

qu - Make a duck´s beak with your hands and say qu, qu, qu.

Literacy Focus- the children will learn about the planets in our solar system and have a go at writing the planets names. They will also invent their own planet which they will have a go at writing about.

At this stage, we look for attempts at phonetically correct spelling as opposed to accurate spellings; for instance 'Jupiter' would be scribed as 'Joopiter' or ‘Joopta’. At this stage, the children find it hard to hear the middle sounds in words so we'd predominantly be looking for children to identify initial and end sounds. We support listening to the sounds in words by counting them with our 'phoneme fingers' so segmenting Joopiter into 6 sounds; J/oo/p/i/t/er. We would repeat the counting of these sounds several times. The emphasis is on 'having a go'.

Expressive Art & Design

Art and   Design: Children will bring to life the planet they invent in their Literacy sessions by using marbling and splatter painting techniques. We also aim to make a 3D solar system with the children which we will hang in the corridor.

Music   and Movement: We will use Holst's 'The Planets' as stimulus for some expressive movement activities and for some musical composition. We will   discuss how Holst represents each of the planets through his movements, and children will be able to talk about the features of the music as well as how it makes them feel. They will then get the opportunity to compose some music that is representative of their very own planet.
