Week Beginning Monday 30th April 2018 (Miss Wilkins)

Class 5 Zebras
For week beginning: 30th April 2018

Welcome to week 3 of the summer term 5! Can you believe that by the end of the week we are half way through the term?

We have another very bury jam packed week ahead and I am excited to hit the ground running on Monday morning!

Just another reminder, as the weather is due to get warmer the children are expected to have to correct uniform in school for such occasions. I ask that they all have a hat and sun cream available and a re-usable plastic bottle for water.

As the children are reading more at school and hopefully at home, I ask that they complete an Accelerated Reader test as soon as they have completed. They have done very well recently and I’d love to continue this! If you have any problems, please do ask the children to sort these with me. Most books should be on there! The children have all now got a new list of spellings in their planners. We begin with our first test on Wednesday afternoon.

Trumpet lessons continue to be every Tuesday. Please ensure the children come to school with their instruments.

MA books are back in full swing and I (and Mrs Clarke) expect these to be returned every Thursday. I also ask that the children look over their ‘think for pink’ corrections too.

Finally, as stated in our school calendar, our Victrix session for the Ancient Greeks will take place on Wednesday 26th May in the morning. The children are able to dress up in Ancient Greek costume if they please. We will then spend the afternoon further exploring the Ancient Greeks. I have been informed that some children are attending a secondary school open morning that day. I am trying to see what can be done about this.

Congratulations to all children who took part in the Orchard Run on Friday. I can’t wait to see how you all got on! A huge good luck to all those (parents and children) who are taking part in the Goudhurst run this Sunday. I unfortunately cannot participate as I am at the netball finals in Canterbury this Sunday! If we win…we win the league!

As always, my door is always open at the end of the day if you wish to discuss anything further J

Kind regards

Miss Wilkins

For week beginning: 30th April 2018

-In our reading sessions the children will be using Reading VIPERS to help with their comprehensive skills. This involves children looking at vocabulary, inference, predictions, explanations, retrieval of information and sequencing or summarising within a chosen text. Further to this, the children have each selected a reading book which they continue to be expected to take home every evening and read for 20 minutes either independently or with someone else (even if they read to their pet). We are lucky to have a wonderful parent reader who is reading with the children each week and they will be expected to read the book they have selected to read independently.  Please ensure they are logging on to Accelerated Reader when they have completed a book! We are always looking for help with parent readers so if anyone is interested and willing to support our children in their reading then please pop in and see me at any point this term. This week we will be answering comprehension questions with regards to an extract regarding the Olympic Games.

-In our Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling lessons this week we will be focussing on commas, conjunctions and statutory and ei / ie words.  Our spelling test will be held on Wednesday afternoon.

-In our writing lessons this week we shall continue looking at poetry and our focus shall be on the text ‘The Dreadful Menace’. Within this we shall be exploring symbolism and hyperbole.

-Our Mathematic lessons begin each day with a mental maths activity. This term we are continuing to work on answering multi-step operations using addition, multiplication, division and subtraction and problem solving and reasoning questions.

-This week in our Maths lessons we shall be exploring properties of triangles at greater depth. I will also dedicate some time this week to continue learning to tell the time and working on time based questions.
