Week Beginning Monday 26th February 2018

Class 5 Zebras
For week beginning: 26th February 2018

Welcome to week two of term 4! And what an exciting week we have!

We continue to learn and explore The Vikings and Anglo-Saxons this term and this Wednesday sees our Viking and Anglo-Saxon day! I have invited the children to come in fancy dress and we will spend the entire day embracing the Viking and Anglo-Saxon history. Throughout the day we shall be looking at Viking law and justice, the last Anglo Saxon Kings and Viking life part 2. We will also be making our Viking shields which we were unable to achieve last week. The children will also be spending time in the day looking at literature about the Vikings.

All children have their Accelerated Reader usernames and passwords. Please can we continue to encourage the children to complete a comprehension test once they have completed a text. Most books should be on there! TO LOG ONTO ACCELERATED READER CLICK HERE: https://ukhosted34.renlearn.co.uk/2241001/

Thank you for the push with practising spellings and times tables. Please can we keep on top of this as it is making a huge positive difference to learning! Focus really needs to be on the 8 and 12 times tables this term!

We continue to have trumpet lessons this term as part of our music curriculum. We will still have our lessons every Tuesday afternoon. Please remember to return with trumpets this Tuesday!

Our PE lessons this term continue to be every Monday afternoon and every other Friday. The children are expected to have a full PE kit and trainers. We normally have our Monday session outside, so I ask that children have the correct outdoor PE kit, however this week we shall be having PE on Thursday and Friday. This term the children will be moving on to tag rugby and gymnastics.

Please do sign up to one of the parent’s evening slots on either the 6th or 7th March. The slots will be 15 minutes long to allow children to participate in their Path Brite presentation prior to parental discussions. They will have time this week to add to their profile, but please be reminded they can do this at home.

English

-In our reading sessions the children will be using Reading VIPERS to help with their comprehensive skills. This involves children looking at vocabulary, inference, predictions, explanations, retrieval of information and sequencing or summarising within a chosen text. Further to this, the children have each selected a reading book which they continue to be expected to take home every evening and read for 20 minutes either independently or with someone else (even if they read to their pet). We are lucky to have a wonderful parent reader who is reading with the children each week and they will be expected to read the book they have selected to read independently.  Please ensure they are logging on to Accelerated Reader when they have completed a book! We are always looking for help with parent readers so if anyone is interested and willing to support our children in their reading then please pop in and see me at any point this term. This week we will be answering comprehension questions on our text How to Train Your Dragon.

-In our Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling lessons this week we will be looking at trickier homophones.

-In our writing lessons this week we shall be looking at persuasive writing.

Maths

-Our Mathematic lessons begin each day with a mental maths activity. This term we are continuing to work on answering multi-step operations using multiplication, division, fractions and decimals.

-This week in our Maths lessons we will be looking at measurement including the converting of units of measure including centimetres and metres, millilitres and litres, grams and kilograms and metres and kilometres.

-MA books are due on Thursday 1st March.

This week is our Viking and Anglo-Saxon day on Wednesday. The children can dress up and we shall be exploring law and justice, the last Anglo Saxon Kings and Viking Life part 2. We will also look at traditional Viking food.

This term we will be exploring ‘The Weather’.

PE

-Within my PE sessions this term we will be focussing on tag rugby.

-Mrs Mileham will be focussing on gymnastics.

-All children are expected to take part in the daily mile run at 9am. No trainers…no run!

-Please can it be reminded that PE kits and trainers should be in school every single day of the school week.

Music

-Throughout Year Five the children will learn to play the trumpet. Each child will have their own trumpet to play with and it is their responsibility to ensure it is kept clean. Our sessions are every Tuesday afternoon and the children are responsible for remembering their instrument.
