Week Beginning Tuesday 20th February 2018 (Miss Wilkins)

Class 5 Zebras
For week beginning: 20th February 2018

Welcome back and a very big welcome to Term 4! Can you believe we are half way through the school year? I hope you all had an amazing half term and had lots of fun and are well rested. We will be hitting the ground running this week!

We continue to learn and explore The Vikings and Anglo-Saxons this term. We have had so much fun already learning together and shall this week turn our attention to Viking life! Please, please, please save any egg boxes, cardboard and cereal boxes for the first week back. We are going to be making Viking shields.

All children have their Accelerated Reader usernames and passwords. Please can we continue to encourage the children to complete a comprehension test once they have completed a text. Most books should be on there! TO LOG ONTO ACCELERATED READER CLICK HERE:

Thank you for the push with practising spellings and times tables. Please can we keep on top of this as it is making a huge positive difference to learning! Focus really needs to be on the 8 and 12 times tables this term!

We continue to have trumpet lessons this term as part of our music curriculum. We will still have our lessons every Tuesday afternoon. I will be sending children home with their trumpets this week to practise at home over the holiday!

Our PE lessons this term continue to be every Monday afternoon and every other Friday. The children are expected to have a full PE kit and trainers. We do have our Monday session outside, so I ask that children have the correct outdoor PE kit. This term the children will be moving on to tag rugby and gymnastics.

As mentioned, we will be having a Viking and Anglo-Saxon day on Wednesday 28th February. This time we will unfortunately not have Vitrix with us (he will make a visit in May for a Greek day), but we will still be dressing up in tradition Viking/Anglo-Saxon costume and will have an amazing day! I will send more details in the coming weeks.

I look forward to the children returning and finding out about their half term fun!

Miss Wilkins

P.S In ICT this week we will continue to explore internet safety and also move on to look at Scratch animations.

For Week Beginning: 20th February 2018

-In our reading sessions the children will be using Reading VIPERS to help with their comprehensive skills. This involves children looking at vocabulary, inference, predictions, explanations, retrieval of information and sequencing or summarising within a chosen text. Further to this, the children have each selected a reading book which they continue to be expected to take home every evening and read for 20 minutes either independently or with someone else (even if they read to their pet). We are lucky to have a wonderful parent reader who is reading with the children each week and they will be expected to read the book they have selected to read independently.  Please ensure they are logging on to Accelerated Reader when they have completed a book! We are always looking for help with parent readers so if anyone is interested and willing to support our children in their reading then please pop in and see me at any point this term. This week we will be answering comprehension questions on our text How to Train Your Dragon.

-In our Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling lessons this week we will be looking at modal verbs. Within our spellings information sessions, we will be focussing on tricky spelling words aisle/isle, allowed/aloud, herd/heard and past/passed and homophones targeted for Year 5 learning. Our spelling test this week will be on Wednesday.

-In our writing lessons this week we shall be looking at producing newspaper reports.

-Our Mathematic lessons begin each day with a mental maths activity. This term we are continuing to work on answering multi-step operations using addition, multiplication, division and subtraction and problem solving and reasoning questions.

-This week in our Maths lessons we will be revisiting decimals, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. We will also look at converting decimals to percentages.

-The children have an MA break this holiday, so will be returned their books on Thursday.

This week will be moving forward to look at Viking life.

This term we will be exploring ‘The Weather’.

-Within my PE sessions this term we will be focussing on tag rugby.

-Mrs Mileham will be focussing on gymnastics.

-All children are expected to take part in the daily mile run at 9am. No trainers…no run!

-Please can it be reminded that PE kits and trainers should be in school every single day of the school week.

-Throughout Year Five the children will learn to play the trumpet. Each child will have their own trumpet to play with and it is their responsibility to ensure it is kept clean. Our sessions are every Tuesday afternoon and the children are responsible for remembering their instrument.

In their learning journals this week the children have been asked to produce a 3D Viking Longboat using a variety of resources. These will be displayed in the classroom. I have also asked that the children continue to play Times Table Rock Stars and simply read, read and READ!
