Week Beginning Monday 19th March 2018 (Miss Wilkins)

Class 5 Zebras
For week beginning: 19th March 2018

Welcome to week FIVE of term four!

How on earth is it week 5 of term 4? I can’t believe how quickly the term has gone!

We have another very busy week this week and have a lot to get through, but I am sure the children are eager and ready to crack on!

We have our trip this week to Hawkhurst Batist Church for the REWIND Easter event. As discussed in the letter which was emailed out to you, the event starts at 1:!5 and will not finish until 3:15, therefore we will be arriving back to school later than the end of the school date. I will send a text out to parents as soon as we have left the venue, in order for you to collect them from school. We will still be eating lunch at school so prepare as normal. I am, however, in need of one additional adult for the trip to accompany us. If you are available to do so, please come and see me ASAP.

All children have their Accelerated Reader usernames and passwords. Please can we continue to encourage the children to complete a comprehension test once they have completed a text. If you have any problems, please do ask the children to sort these with me. Most books should be on there! TO LOG ONTO ACCELERATED READER CLICK HERE:

I am again getting concerned that the children are not learning their spellings. For our spelling tests. It is the children’s responsibility to be ready for our weekly tests on a Wednesday. We are up to date now due to the snow and all spellings are in their planners.

We continue to have trumpet lessons this term as part of our music curriculum. We will still have our lessons every Tuesday afternoon.!

Finally, the Arts Festival is fast approaching. Please can you ensure you are fully aware of the details of the night from the letters which were sent out last week with the children.

For week beginning: 16th March 2018

-In our reading sessions the children will be using Reading VIPERS to help with their comprehensive skills. This involves children looking at vocabulary, inference, predictions, explanations, retrieval of information and sequencing or summarising within a chosen text. Further to this, the children have each selected a reading book which they continue to be expected to take home every evening and read for 20 minutes either independently or with someone else (even if they read to their pet). We are lucky to have a wonderful parent reader who is reading with the children each week and they will be expected to read the book they have selected to read independently.  Please ensure they are logging on to Accelerated Reader when they have completed a book! We are always looking for help with parent readers so if anyone is interested and willing to support our children in their reading then please pop in and see me at any point this term. This week we will be answering comprehension questions with regards to the text Beowulf.

-In our Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling lessons this week we will continue to look at prefixes. Our week will consist at becoming confident in words ending with the ‘shun’, ‘shus’, ‘shul’, ‘ant’, ‘ence’, ‘ancy’, ‘ency’ and ‘ance’.

-In our writing lessons this week we shall be exploring persuasive writing.

-Our Mathematic lessons begin each day with a mental maths activity. This term we are continuing to work on answering multi-step operations using addition, multiplication, division and subtraction and problem solving and reasoning questions.

-This week in our Maths lessons we will be focusing on percentages.

-MA continues to be due in every Thursday.

This term we will be exploring ‘The Weather’.

-Within my PE sessions this term we will be focussing on tag rugby.

-Mrs Mileham will be focussing on gymnastics.

-All children are expected to take part in the daily mile run at 9am. No trainers…no run!

-Please can it be reminded that PE kits and trainers should be in school every single day of the school week.

-Throughout Year Five the children will learn to play the trumpet. Each child will have their own trumpet to play with and it is their responsibility to ensure it is kept clean. Our sessions are every Tuesday afternoon and the children are responsible for remembering their instrument.

-This week we will be exploring Anglo-Saxon artefacts and designing our own brooch.

-This term we will be looking at using the programme Audacity to create interviews. This week we shall be planning to build a school building. Children will interview children and ‘designers/architects’ about their building ideas. Children will edit the content.

Homework  Children are to create an eye catching poster, detailing all that they have learnt about the Vikings this term. Please use any resources required and include pictures and drawings.
