For Week Beginning Monday 12th March 2018 (Miss Wilkins)

Class 5 Zebras
For week beginning: 12th March 2018

Welcome to week four of term four!

Is anyone else as baffled as I am that we are already in week four of the term already? The snow (I’m still talking about it) has a lot to answer for with us missing a week.

I would like to thank you for attending such a successful parents evening. It was a pleasure to meet with you and speak of all the wonderful things your child has achieved this year. If you were unable to attend, please do book a session with me straight after school on either a Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday. It was also wonderful to see the children present their Path Brite profiles to so many of you. They are able to work on these at home throughout the year using the following link (children should have their usernames and passwords in their planners):

Viking and Anglo-Saxon day was just incredible. We had so much fun learning about law and justice, Viking food, making our shields, looking and exploring Viking artefacts and finally dressing up in traditional Viking costume. I have taken photos as will place them on the school website as soon as I retrieve my iPad from school on Monday.

All children have their Accelerated Reader usernames and passwords. Please can we continue to encourage the children to complete a comprehension test once they have completed a text. Most books should be on there! TO LOG ONTO ACCELERATED READER CLICK HERE:

I am again getting concerned that the children are not learning their spellings. For our spelling tests. It is the children’s responsibility to be ready for our weekly tests on a Wednesday. We are up to date now due to the snow and all spellings are in their planners.

We continue to have trumpet lessons this term as part of our music curriculum. We will still have our lessons every Tuesday afternoon.!

For week beginning: 12th March 2018

-In our reading sessions the children will be using Reading VIPERS to help with their comprehensive skills. This involves children looking at vocabulary, inference, predictions, explanations, retrieval of information and sequencing or summarising within a chosen text. Further to this, the children have each selected a reading book which they continue to be expected to take home every evening and read for 20 minutes either independently or with someone else (even if they read to their pet). We are lucky to have a wonderful parent reader who is reading with the children each week and they will be expected to read the book they have selected to read independently.  Please ensure they are logging on to Accelerated Reader when they have completed a book! We are always looking for help with parent readers so if anyone is interested and willing to support our children in their reading then please pop in and see me at any point this term. This week we will be answering comprehension questions on our text How to Train Your Dragon, in particular chapters three and four.

-In our Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling lessons this week we will continue to look at prefixes. Our week will consist at becoming confident in the prefixes, ‘mid’, ‘pre’, ‘fore’, ‘non’ and finally hyphenating prefixes.

-In our writing lessons this week we shall be completing a BIG Write for newspaper articles and then will move on to look at persuasive writing and writing a persuasive letter.

-Our Mathematic lessons begin each day with a mental maths activity. This term we are continuing to work on answering multi-step operations using addition, multiplication, division and subtraction and problem solving and reasoning questions.

-This week in our Maths lessons we will be continuing to understand measurement. In particular, we are focussing on converting a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit including:

  • From centimetres to metres
  • From metres to kilometres
  • From grams to kilograms
  • From millilitres to litres.

Finally, we will put all our knowledge together to answer some tricky problem solving activities including measurement. We will then move on to explore percentages.

-MA continues to be due in every Thursday.

This week our final history/geography lesson on the term will be exploring Viking Gods.

This term we will be exploring ‘The Weather’.

-Within my PE sessions this term we will be focussing on tag rugby.

-Mrs Mileham will be focussing on gymnastics.

-All children are expected to take part in the daily mile run at 9am. No trainers…no run!

-Please can it be reminded that PE kits and trainers should be in school every single day of the school week.

-Throughout Year Five the children will learn to play the trumpet. Each child will have their own trumpet to play with and it is their responsibility to ensure it is kept clean. Our sessions are every Tuesday afternoon and the children are responsible for remembering their instrument.

This week we will be exploring Anglo-Saxon artefacts and designing our own outfit.

This term we will be looking at using the programme Audacity to create interviews. This week we shall be planning to build a school building. Children will interview children and ‘designers/architects’ about their building ideas. Children will edit the content.

Research and then create a menu with a three course meal that the Vikings would have eaten.
