Week Beginning Monday 5th February 2018 (Miss Wilkins)

Class 5 Zebras
For week beginning: 5th February 2018

Welcome to week the last week (!!) of Term 3! Where on earth has the time gone? What a term we have had! The children have been amazing and have learnt so much in such a short period of time!

Just to keep you updated, I will not be in school on Wednesday this week as am at a conference, however the wonderful Mrs Clarke will be taking the children for the day. I will therefore be teaching the children on Friday instead!

One Wednesday we have our annual Ash Wednesday service at St Mary’s church. As I am not in school, we are in desperate need of two parents to help our wonderful staff accompany the children to church and back. They will be leaving at 9:00 and returning at 10:15. If you are available please let me know ASAP.

We continue to learn and explore The Vikings and Anglo-Saxons this week. We have had so much fun already learning together and shall this week turn our attention to Danegeld!

This week is assessment week so we will spend a lot of time testing what we have learnt throughout the last term. As always this is nothing to worry about and the children will enjoy the process as always.

As always, the children should all have a reading book at home which they must read at least 20 minutes every evening. I have taken notes to identify the books they are reading and checking their planners every Tuesday to ensure this is being recorded. The children can record this information themselves.

Thank you for the push with practising spellings and times tables. Please can we keep on top of this as it is making a huge positive difference to learning!

We continue to have trumpet lessons this term as part of our music curriculum. We will still have our lessons every Tuesday afternoon. I will be sending children home with their trumpets this week to practise at home over the holiday!

Our PE lessons this term continue to be every Monday afternoon and every other Friday. The children are expected to have a full PE kit and trainers. We do have our Monday session outside, so I ask that children have the correct outdoor PE kit.

I am excited to announce that I will be hosting a Viking day in the classroom on the 28th February. This is a whole day dedicated to the Vikings and in invite the children to dress up and participate in lots of fun activities! Please keep an eye out for up and coming information in the coming weeks.

I look forward to the week ahead, I hope the children are too!

Miss Wilkins

For week beginning: 5th February

-In our reading sessions the children will be using Reading VIPERS to help with their comprehensive skills. This involves children looking at vocabulary, inference, predictions, explanations, retrieval of information and sequencing or summarising within a chosen text. Further to this, the children have each selected a reading book which they continue to be expected to take home every evening and read for 20 minutes either independently or with someone else (even if they read to their pet). We are lucky to have a wonderful parent reader who is reading with the children each week and they will be expected to read the book they have selected to read independently.  Please ensure they are logging on to Accelerated Reader when they have completed a book! We are always looking for help with parent readers so if anyone is interested and willing to support our children in their reading then please pop in and see me at any point this term. This week we have our termly comprehension assessment.

-In our Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling lessons this week we will be looking at modal verbs. Within our spellings information sessions, we will be focussing on tricky spelling words aisle/isle, allowed/aloud, herd/heard and past/passed and homophones targeted for Year 5 learning. Our spelling test this week will be on Thursday. We also have our end of term GPS and spelling assessments this week.

-Our Mathematic lessons begin each day with a mental maths activity. This term we are working on answering multi-step operations using addition, multiplication, division and subtraction.

-This week in our Maths lessons we will be looking at litre and millilitres, converting units of length, subtracting decimals and finding fractions of three digit numbers. We also have our end on term maths assessments.

-We continue to use MA books as homework to consolidate the children’s mathematical learning. MA books are due in every Thursday and the children are expected to complete a page.

We begin our new top of The Vikings and Saxons. This week we shall be exploring Danegeld.

This term we will be finishing our unit ‘what is the date?.

-Within my PE sessions this term we will be focussing on hockey.

-Mrs Mileham will be continuing the theme of invasion games and shall be teaching dance.

-All children are expected to take part in the daily mile run at 9am. No trainers…no run!

-Please can it be reminded that PE kits and trainers should be in school every single day of the school week.

-Throughout Year Five the children will learn to play the trumpet. Each child will have their own trumpet to play with and it is their responsibility to ensure it is kept clean. Our sessions are every Tuesday afternoon and the children are responsible for remembering their instrument.

This Tuesday in national Safer Internet Day. I will be leading the day in school and the children will focus this week on using this internet safely!

In their learning journals this week the children have been asked to produce a job application for a role in hosting the celebration assembly.  I am aware the text on the stickers is very small, but I wanted to ensure all the details were included on a small sticker. The sticker stated:

From Term 4, Year Five will be taking control of Friday’s     celebration assembly. There are a range of jobs to take control of or announcing, including:

-pride cup

-Star of the week

-laptop control

-Walking Bug

-House Points

So, I would like you to write a job application applying for one (or all) of these jobs. I am looking for a well written application and enthusiastic candidates to fulfil the positions.

I will announce the successful candidates on Thursday 8th February at 3pm.

Due date: Wednesday 7th February 2018
