Week Beginning Tuesday 2nd July 2018 (Miss Wilkins)

Class 5 Zebras
For week beginning: 2nd July 2018

Welcome to week 5 of the summer term 6! Can you believe we only have 3 weeks left together as Zebras...time is flying! The weather is also helping our joyful attitudes!

I am posting this early this week as I shall be climbing three mountains this weekend…I’m slightly nervous but very excited right now! I am aiming to complete the Three Peaks Challenge in 24 hours, raising funds for Demelza House and the school PTFA. If you would like to donate please click on the following link: I will be back in school on Monday morning (although in training) and may not be feeling my regular self! I look forward to sharing photos and stories on our return!

I will not be in class on Monday morning (science training) and the lovely Mrs P will be taking the class. I will return after lunch and we will have PE. I will also be absent on Tuesday as I am heading to London for a Shakespeare workshop for next year’s production. I leave the class in the very capable hands of Mr Hardman and Mrs Plewes. Rest assured, I’ll be back in class on Wednesday ready to take on the last couple of weeks of term. Hopefully my legs and feet will be back to normal by then!

Please, another reminder, as the weather is due to get warmer the children are expected to have to correct uniform in school for such occasions. I ask that they all have a hat and sun cream available and a re-usable plastic bottle for water. PE is outdoors for the remainder of term and the children are expected to wear the correct shorts and t-shirts! No more trousers please at it gets very warm very quickly! I had many disappointing conversations with children about not having their PE kit with them because they have had their kit for a sports club the day previously Unfortunately this is not acceptable and PE kits should be in school every day. This week we have PE on Monday and Friday.

On Thursday afternoon, we have the delight of meeting the children’s buddies for the new school year. This is a very exciting and enjoyable time and I look forward to enjoying this experience with them!

As the children are reading more at school and hopefully at home, I ask that they complete an Accelerated Reader test as soon as they have completed. They have done very well recently and I’d love to continue thisIf you have any problems, please do ask the children to sort these with me. Most books should be on there! Please continue to encourage and support your child with their spellings each week. They are so important for their writing and becoming a super speller means a lot for all children! This week’s spelling test will be on Wednesday.

MA is due in on Thursday as normal! This is the last couple of weeks of this so please have a wonderful last push!

We are slowly approaching the end of year performance of Yee Ha! The children have all been given a copy of the lyrics to the songs they will be performing! Please follow this link below to the school’s You Tube page so your child can rehearse. We have lots of rehearsals this week!

As always, my door is always open at the end of the day if you wish to discuss anything further J

Enjoy your weekend…please think of me and the walking team!

Kind regards

Miss Wilkins

For week beginning: 2nd July 2018

-In our reading sessions the children will be using Reading VIPERS to help with their comprehensive skills. This involves children looking at vocabulary, inference, predictions, explanations, retrieval of information and sequencing or summarising within a chosen text. Further to this, the children have each selected a reading book which they continue to be expected to take home every evening and read for 20 minutes either independently or with someone else (even if they read to their pet). We are lucky to have a wonderful parent reader who is reading with the children each week and they will be expected to read the book they have selected to read independently.  Please ensure they are logging on to Accelerated Reader when they have completed a book! We are always looking for help with parent readers so if anyone is interested and willing to support our children in their reading then please pop in and see me at any point this term. This week we will be doing more complex comprehension work as we move closer to Year 6.

-In our Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling lessons this week we will be looking at the active and passive voice and have a push of Year 5/6 statutory spellings.

-In our writing sessions this week, we shall continue to look at explanation writing, completing our BIG write on Wednesday and Thursday.

-Our Mathematic lessons begin each day with a mental maths activity. This term we are continuing to work on answering multi-step operations using addition, multiplication, division and subtraction and problem solving and reasoning questions.

-This week in our Maths lessons we shall be focusing on problem solving with line graphs, pints, inches and feet and finally Mean.

This term we will be exploring ‘The Olympics.

This week we will continue creating our Greek Islands fact files.

-Within my PE sessions this term we will be focussing on rounders. However, this week we will begin to get ready for sports day.

-Mrs Mileham will be focussing on athletics.

-All children are expected to take part in the daily mile run at 9am. No trainers…no run!

-Please can it be reminded that PE kits and trainers should be in school every single day of the school week.

-We also have tennis sessions on Friday afternoons for the next two weeks.

This term our focus is on Ecology.

This term we are focusing on Islam and what it means to be a Muslim in Britain today.

This week we will be further looking at coding and shall be using Tickle and Blockly with the iPads.

The Greeks loved the theatre. Write a short play to perform to the class.
