W/c 23rd April - Weds, Thurs & Fri - Mrs Donoghue

Class 2 Kudus
For week beginning: 23rd April 2018

I will be in class on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday this week.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Parent Information Session last week; it was lovely to see you all.

Hopefully, your child has told you all about the Living Eggs project – a grand total of 9 chicks hatched over the week and they have spent the weekend with me – I will be (reluctantly) bringing them back to school on Monday.  They are with us until Friday this week and all classes will have the opportunity to visit them this week.

Forest School starts this week so please ensure your child is fully kitted out.  Willow group will be going in the morning session up until half term and Field Maple group will be going in the afternoon.  They will swap over after half term.  We will remind you of the groups next week.

Best wishes,

Mrs Donoghue

We will be leading up to a BIG WRITE on Thursday by gathering ideas on Wednesday and creating an imagination map and word bank; this will be used for the BIG WRITE on Thursday which is perfect as we will have a small group as half will be at Forest School.  This will mean that I can work 1:1 with each child throughout the morning and pinpoint and support any areas of difficulty – we certainly make the most of the time!   Our work on Friday will depend on the outcome of Thursday; it may be that we have small groups focusing on grammar or editing and improving skills for example.

We have a Storyteller Workshop on Thursday too – so it’s a very exciting week!  Children who are in school in the morning will attend an assembly led by the storyteller and those in the afternoon will attend a workshop so all children will benefit.

Reading Comprehension – the children will continue to read straight after lunch on a daily basis;  they will also take part in a group reading session;  this new initiative is based around texts which typically takes 60 seconds to read before discussing questions relating to the text.

Spelling  We will be focusing on the spelling lists that were sent home prior to the holidays and linked to the Spelling Bee completion.  We would like all children to learn these words and they will be tested randomly throughout the week.  We will also be focusing on rules within the classroom which will be linked to topic words.  The children have also been given a spelling book which they are enjoying using – the children have to try and spell the word first before showing to an adult who will correct if necessary.

We will continue with Time this week but also spend some time looking at example questions likely to appear in ‘Puzzle Books’ (our code word for SATs!) which take place in May.  We have not discussed SATs with the children and we do not intend to – we refer to them only as puzzle books and this is a phrase they have heard throughout the year when they have completed formal assessments.

A new term and new units!  Mrs Mileham will be focusing on Tennis and myself and Mrs Benson will be focusing on athletics and of course, Outdoor Adventure Activities will be covered in Forest School.
