W/c 16th April - Mrs Donoghue - Weds, Thurs, Fri

Class 2 Kudus
For week beginning: 16th April 2018

I will be in class on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday this week.

Welcome back – I hope you have had a lovely break and are looking forward to the new term; it’s hard to believe that we are in our final term in Y2 –however we will be going out with a bang with a huge range of exciting opportunities planned such as Forest School, additional opportunities for outdoor learning as well as a school trip or two (currently still in the planning stage!).

We have  parent information sessions on Wednesday after school, there are two sessions as before; 3.25-3.55 and 4.00-4.30pm –  I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Our topic this term is ‘Nature Detectives’ which links beautifully with Forest School and outdoor learning.

Best wishes,

Mrs Donoghue

English

We are focusing on short writing ‘bursts’ this week; Typically, our English lesson will be one hour and it will be divided into sections;

  • 5 minutes discussion,
  • 10 minute planning time (using their new creating/imagination map books),
  • 10 minute word collection, which will also focus on spelling rules etc,
  • 25 minutes writing time
  • 10 minutes editing and improving.

We have done a lot of creative writing this year and now we are focusing on time management as well.  You child may have mentioned ‘Writing Walter’ – if not ask them, it is there to help them add more detail to the writing and is proving successful so far.

Reading Comprehension – the children will continue to read straight after lunch on a daily basis;  they will also take part in a group reading session;  this new initiative is based around texts which typically takes 60 seconds to read before discussing questions relating to the text.

Spelling  We will be focusing on the spelling lists that were sent home prior to the holidays and linked to the Spelling Bee completion.  We would like all children to learn these words and they will be tested randomly throughout the week.  We will also be focusing on rules within the classroom which will be linked to topic words.  The children have also been given a spelling book which they are enjoying using – the children have to try and spell the word first before showing to an adult who will correct if necessary.

Maths

This week we will be looking at Time and focusing on reading the time on the clock to the nearest 15 minutes and then the nearest 5 minutes.  The 5x table is a perfect complement to time so we will be continuing with this too.  Every Maths lesson will start with a challenge; this may be a problem that we can unpick and solve or simply looking at all the ways we can show the date, e.g. Wednesday will be the 18th, so the target number will be 18.  The children will consider a range of maths concepts, including using the language greater than, less than etc.

Forest School

Our long awaited sessions start this week!  We will be sending out additional information when we return so please check your child’s book bags.

P.E.

A new term and new units!  Mrs Mileham will be focusing on Tennis and myself and Mrs Benson will be focusing on athletics and of course, Outdoor Adventure Activities will be covered in Forest School.
