Week commencing 9th Oct - Mrs Donoghue - Weds-Fri

Class 2 Kudus
For week beginning: 9th October 2017

I will be in class on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday this week.

Homework:  There is a lot of confusion surrounding the phonics books and hindsight has told me that it would be more sensible to work on one page per week rather than two.  This will allow me to spend 3 days focusing on one rule and for the children to gain a deeper understanding rather than skimming over it and moving onto another.  Therefore, phonics books will be sent home on a Friday and must be returned to school by the following Wednesday.

The PTFA are coming in to support the children in decorating butterflies for a cross on Wednesday afternoon this week.  Thank you in advance for their support.

Nativity:  I know, I know but it’s going to be upon us quickly after we return after half term.  We have chosen a performance entitled Manger Mouse and all Y2 children will be asked to write a letter of application for a specific role, or roles (they may like to have some other choices).  A cast list will and synopsis will be sent home before the half term break and applications need to be given to myself and Mrs Benson by Friday 3rd November.

Have a good week.

Mrs Donoghue

We started our unit on poetry last week and all the children had a go at writing some silly, rhyming sentences.   This week, we will continue with our poetry unit but this time looking at the text in more detail and completing a comprehension activity.    As with the maths, we will be assessing the childrens understanding and completing assessments in Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling as well as comprehension on an unfamiliar text.

We will be continuing with adding two & three digit numbers (without re-grouping) this week, following the rules of adding the ones, then the tens and finally the hundreds.  The unit will have additional challenges including showing understanding through bar models.  We will also complete a ‘puzzle book’ which will assess the childrens knowledge of a range of concepts and will inform teaching and planning going forward.

COMING SOON… a fantastic fun app called Rockstars for children to compete against each other in their timestables – at school and at home.  They will have their own individual log in.

OPEN MORNING – you are all welcome to attend a Maths open morning on Wednesday 18th October.  Please see the latest newsletter for details on how to sign up.

Last week we studied a poem about Creation and annotated it with illustrations; this week we will writing rules for our world.

Mrs Mileham will be taking the children for OAA (Outdoor Adventure Activities) on Friday afternoon.

The children have a 30 minute drumming session every week.  The class are split into two groups and receive excellent tuition from Ben, an external music teacher.  Due to unforeseen circumstances, Ben had to cancel at short notice so this week the children will benefit from two sessions – one on Thursday and then another on Friday.

Art & DT

The children will finish their week with Art & DT.  This is still in the planning stage but is guaranteed to be creative and colourful.  This session is led by Mrs Morris who can be thanked for many of our wonderful displays in the classroom and who has a talent, and very keen interest, in this subject.
