Mrs Donoghue - Wednesday 6th - Friday 8th September

Class 2 Kudus
For week beginning: 4th September 2017

Welcome to Kudu class!  I hope you have had a wonderful Summer break and are looking forward to the all the exciting adventures Year 2 brings!   As you would expect, the first week is all about settling in and everyone getting to know each other, however, that doesn’t mean we won’t be doing any work!  Please see below for an outline of the topics we will be starting.

As you are already aware, Mrs Benson will be in class on Monday & Tuesday and I will be in Wednesday to Friday.  Our wonderful assistants are Mrs Morris, Mrs McCarmick and Mr Draper.

We will be holding parent information sessions next week; the first two are on Tuesday and then again on Thursday – exact timings will be on the newsletter but they are straight after school.  We hope to see you all there.

Have a lovely week.

Mrs Donoghue

English

Our topic this term is Space Quest and our texts will be based around this theme.  Our first text is Emily’s Star, a beautiful story and we will be exploring the vocabulary, acting it out, drawing a story map and re-writing the ending – but not all this week!  This unit is likely to take 2/3 weeks (Wednesday-Friday).  This week the children will be writing a ‘cold’ story with a space theme.  A cold story allows the children to be free with their ideas and is written before any input.  At the end of the unit, the children will write a ‘hot’ story using all their new knowledge, vocabulary and skills and hopefully there should be a remarkable difference!

Maths

We will be looking at place value this week and using resources to count up to 100 and beyond and recognising the place value of each digit in a 2 digit number – e.g.  23 – 2 tens and 3 ones.

P.E.

Please make sure your child has a named PE kit in school at all times. They will also need trainers rather than plimsolls, especially for the mile run.  We prefer it if trainers are left in school (they will be placed in the racks outside the classroom with their wellies), however we do appreciate that some children only have one pair so please send them the next day if you have taken them home.

House Activity

The children will be working within their houseson Wednesday afternoon.  Each house has been given one of our school values (Love, Trust, Peace, Community, Friendship & Joy) and will be working together to create artwork which will be hung onthe perimeter fence.

Art/D&T

We have some activities with a space theme planned which will be on display in the corridor in the near future.
