W/c 4th January and w/c 8th January - Mrs Donoghue

Class 2 Kudus
For week beginning: 4th January 2018

I will be in class on Thursday & Friday this week and Wednesday, Thursday & Friday next week.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and 2018 will be a great year for you all.  Thank you so much for the kind gifts you gave me; I was really touched your kind words and generosity.

We have a student teacher joining us on 8th January until 16th March.  Miss Wilford is in her final placement before becoming a fully-fledged teacher and we are delighted that she will be working alongside all of the Y2 team and will no doubt be an asset to the children and their development.

We have two parent information sessions this term; the first is next Tuesday (9th) and another session is on Thursday (11th) although you only need to attend one!  Whilst it would be lovely to see all of you, we understand it can be difficult so please be reassured that everything we discuss will be on our class page.  The topic web for the Spring Term is already uploaded.

Online links which support learning in class:

Maths Rockstar:

Squeebles: – an excellent app to be used on ipads - £2.99

Table Mountain: (evaluation version) to be used on a laptop/computer.

I will be using the wonderful book, You Choose, to inspire writing this week.  The children will choose one of the pictures and give reasons for their choices by writing sentences and using conjunctions (and, because etc) to extend.  Next week, the children will continue writing sentences but this time to write a description of a picture (a messy bedroom full of toys!!) using adjectives as well as commas in lists of adjectives.

Reading Comprehension – the children will continue to read straight after lunch on a daily basis;  they will also take part in a group reading session;  this new initiative is based around texts which typically takes 60 seconds to read before discussing questions relating to the text.

Spelling: I will be sending home an A-Z list of words that all Year 2 children need to be familiar with, and can spell by the end of the academic year.  We will continue with spellings this term, focusing on the common exception words (as the A-Z lists) that all Year 2 children are expected to be able to read, write and spell by the end of the academic year.  You will see from the table that there are two sets of words; the second set of words appear as the first set the following week therefore allowing for revision, having another go and building confidence.  All spellings words come with a Snakes & Ladders game which will send home in a pack and load onto our class page– please use it to support your child at home and also include any other creative ways of helping them.  We will continue to have a spelling test every Friday.  A quizlet activity will also be created.

Subtraction will be the focus for the next week and a half; the children will be subtracting tens from a given number and will be able to talk confidently about the ones staying the same thus linking with place value.  The children will then progress onto subtracting two-digit from two-digit numbers (with some extending to re-grouping) as well as learning about inverse operations and using this new knowledge to solve missing numbers.  Every lesson will start with mental calculations and quick recall using a counting stick and there will also be one or two reasoning activities to tackle too!

We will be starting a new 6 week unit next week; I Wanna Play In A Band by Joanna Mangona is a children’s rock song.  In this unit, the children will listen to, and appraise various well known rock songs such as We Will Rock You by Queen & Rockin’ All Over The World by Status Quo.  We will then build our knowledge through a variety of musical activities before performing the song which we will record and upload on our class blog.

The question we will be discussing this term is ‘What is the good news that Jesus brings?’   Next week I will be making a list with the class of 10-plus things mums, dads or other carers do to show they love their children. I will also be reading the story Luke 11:9-13 and asking the children what they think the story is about and why Jesus is telling the story.

Another new unit starts this week and I am quite excited about this one!  For those of you who love Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (and I do!) you will delighted to know that ‘Doll on a Music Box’ will be the inspiration for our dance routine this term, which also links beautifully with our current topic, Lost in a Toy Museum.  We will all watch the video clip and discuss the choreography before having a go at re-creating it to perform to a small audience at the end of the term.  Again, I will record it and put it on our class blog.

Mrs Mileham and Brian, a cricket specialist from ‘A Chance to Shine’, will be teaching children how to play cricket once a fortnight, starting on Friday 12th January.
