Intended Learning- Week Commencing 08.01.18

Class 1 Elephants
For week beginning: 8th January 2018

I hope you had a lovely weekend! Although it was a short week, I was so impressed by how focused and enthusiastic the children were last week. This week we will be diving right into our ‘In the Toy Chest’ topic, which as you may be able to guess, revolves around toys!

Maths

We will be learning about length; vocabulary to do with length and height, comparing lengths, and beginning to measure lengths with non-standard units.

English

We will be reading the stories ‘Dogger’ by Shirley Hughes, and ‘Knuffle Bunny’ by Mo Willems. Both of these stories involve a lost toy, and we will be answering some comprehension questions to show our understanding before we write our own lost toy story next week. We will also learn how to use commas to write lists.

Science

Thank you to those of you who brought in plastic bottles last week. We will be using them in a ‘squirt experiment’ to see how the shape affects how much water comes out when the bottle is squeezed. We will plan the experiment, and record the results with bar graphs.

Phonics

We will be learning the different ways to write down the ‘ee’  phoneme (sound) : ee, ea, ie, e_e, y

Art

Thank you for your support in sending in the toys on the first day back. We took some photos of them, and will be using the photos and the children’s brilliant sketches to make clay sculptures.

Computing

We will have a go at giving very specific instructions- which is a lot harder than it sounds. Keep an eye on our class blog to see just how tricky it can be.

Music

We started Djembe drumming last week, which was very well received by the children! We will continue this every Thursday until Easter.

PSHE

We will be learning about washing hands- why it is so important and how to do it properly.

RE

We will be learning why Jesus is ‘The Good News’ to Christians.

PE

We will be practising stick and ball skills this week, including placing and picking up a rugby ball, and handling a hockey stick correctly.

Clothes in the ether...

There are still some missing jumpers and parts of PE kits from the end of last term. I’d be really grateful if you could check for any that aren’t yours as soon as possible.

Dates for your Diary
